One of my favorite things to do in small towns in Mexico, is go to a local baseball game. I don’t normally follow baseball at home – but sitting in the bleachers, with hawkers selling flautas, enchiladas, tacos and fruit juices tied up in plastic baggies is a delight.
It is surpassed by another Mexican pastime of people watching in the central Zócalo (main square), sipping a cold beverage and snacking on “chapulines”. I didn’t recognize this word, but the crispy, fried bits dressed in lime, chili and garlic in the woman’s basket looked good. I bought a scoop and crunched and sipped. After a while, I noticed a bug in my snack… then realized my snack was bugs – grasshoppers actually!
Since then, I’ve had chapulines, cocopaches and other bugs served in a variety of ways. Most of them delicious.
