Sometimes a tragic event can inspire art. The overdose of a friend’s son was a wake-up call to me. It evoked feelings and desires that were buried and complex. Perhaps we all have elements of addictions to various degrees – at the very least, we might acknowledge fixations to certain routines and ways of thinking.
Although I never met him – I was experiencing a form of grief. It is still difficult to reconcile with this event and how it affected me. Channeling my mysterious grief into some form of action, I focused on change, insight and carving a vessel out of clay.
Creating a gift for my friend, I imagined that most people have faced tragedy in their lives and felt broken with a wash of contradictions floating inside them.
