The sea has, for many years, been viewed as a feminine force – perhaps due to its mystery, power and danger. It is also life giving for many animals and plants while also providing us with nutrients and 50% of our oxygen.
Seaweed is abundantly present in all oceans. While on a kayak trip in the Johnstone strait off the NE shore of Vancouver Island, bull kelp forests caressed our vessels. At times my paddle would tangle in the seaweed. I would twirl it like fettucine to slide it off the end.
The magnificent organism grows up to 60 feet in one season. It releases spores to reproduce, and existing plants are often washed away by storms each winter.
This kayak adventure was my first excursion with my altered torso. I felt restricted and liberated at the same time – a 3-week reprieve.
A body tangled yet free.
