Somewhere in King’s Canyon (aka Watarrka) there is a little brown stuffed toy dog. It traveled in my daughter’s backpack, and sometimes in her arms, up and down the slopes that rise as high as 100 m.
The canyon originated from a crack. Wind, rain and flood waters widened, deepened and weathered away over 40 million years to eventually form this magnificent natural masterpiece. The canyon’s geology is two layers of distinct red sandstone separated by a layer of purple shale.
Its cultural significance to the Aboriginal peoples, inhabitants over 20,000 years, is evident in their sacred sites, natural waterhole and King’s creek.
Our daughter, being only 5 years old at the time, we had to shamelessly bribe with squares of chocolate to reach each summit or the next folded rock structure in the distance. An accomplishment certificate, cold drink and a kangaroo sausage rewarded our delirious selves at the end of the day.
The little brown dog remained behind with the spirits of the canyon – the Dreamtime.
