Sometimes things are not what they seem. That couldn’t be more relevant today as we navigate our way through real and altered realities on the internet and in media. Art often produces illusions using mixed materials and abstract constructs. Nature can also hide its true self through disguise mechanisms in order to survive, catch prey, avoid predation. Yet when we need to know or understand a fact, abstracts are less useful.
Coral is an animal – not a plant or a rock. Even knowing this fact, it is hard to remember when diving or snorkeling among these whimsical shapes in warm tropical waters. Corals are invertebrates. They secrete a hard limestone to create a skeleton and use tentacles to capture food from the water. Their beauty mesmerizes with their variety of colour, exotic shapes and intricate structures.
Beauty can inspire an emotional connection to the object.
